In search of the freshest, most flavorful apples...

Jack and I love to explore new sights in and around the New England area. This weekend, we were in search of the freshest, most flavorful apples we could find. We headed west along Massachusetts Route 2. Route 2 is a beautiful New England road, particularly in the fall. Along the roadside, we passed farm stands selling pumpkins, cornstalks, and bunches of dried sunflowers.

We passed Apple orchards serving fresh-pressed cider, an occasional antique shop, and spectacular foliage of red, yellow and orange, as we wound through the small towns of central and western Massachusetts. Route 2 starts at the Boston Common in Downtown Boston and ends in the northwest corner of Massachusetts at the New York border, where it connects to New York State Route 2. But that day, we landed in Shelburne Falls, Ma.

I had just received an order for 15 Apple Spice Cakes. A perfect treat on a crisp fall day. I am passionate about using the best and freshest ingredients, so our journey in search of apples took us to Apex Orchards ( They did not disappoint! The orchard staff was friendly and knowledgeable. I sampled a few varieties and decided on Cortland's, a cold, hardy apple that originated in New York. I wanted a combination of sweet and tart, so Cortland was the winner.  I can't wait to return to Apex Orchard next year. It's worth the trip!
